How to choose an exercise mat
You choose an exercise mat by three things: thickness, weight and surface. A thicker mat protects your knees and joints, a thinner one gives you better contact with the floor and is easier to carry. A heavier mat lies still on the floor, a lighter one is better for taking to the studio. The surface decides how well it grips when you sweat.
Which mat thickness is right for you?
For yoga and Pilates at home, most people choose between 4 and 6 mm. The Manduka PRO is 6 mm and about 3.4 kg, for firm support in a permanent spot. The Manduka PROlite is 4.7 mm and about 2.1 kg, for people who carry their mat. YDL offers 3.5, 5 and 5.5 mm. The 2 mm Manduka PRO Travel folds into a bag and is made for travel.
How do Manduka, Liforme and YDL differ?
- Manduka: closed-cell PVC mats, latex free, made in Germany. They do not absorb sweat and wipe clean easily.
- Liforme: a GripForMe polyurethane surface on a natural rubber base, with AlignForMe markers for placing your hands and feet. Regular models are about 185 × 68 cm.
- YDL: cork mats, Combo mats with a microfiber top and Infinity mats made of polyurethane on natural rubber, in many designs.
Yoga mat or exercise mat?
People say yoga mat, exercise mat or workout mat and mean the same thing. Every mat in this category works for yoga, Pilates, stretching and floor exercises. If you sweat a lot, choose a surface that absorbs moisture (Liforme, YDL Infinity, YDL Combo) or add a towel over your mat.
